Preparing Our Hearts for the Daniel Fast

As we begin our 21-Day Daniel Fast, it’s important to remember that fasting is not primarily about food - it is about drawing near to God.

In Scripture, fasting is always connected to humility, prayer, repentance, and attentiveness to the voice of the Lord. When Daniel chose to fast, he did so with a resolved heart - one that desired to honor God above comfort or convenience.

“But Daniel resolved that he would not defile himself…” - Daniel 1:8

The Daniel Fast invites us into that same heart posture: a season of intentional surrender, where we quiet distractions and make space for God to work in us.

Fasting Is About Presence, Not Perfection

It’s important to say this clearly: The goal of the fast is not perfection.

God is not measuring how well we follow a food list - He is inviting us to seek His presence.

Jesus reminds us that fasting is not meant to be performative or burdensome, but deeply personal.

“When you fast…your Father who sees in secret will reward you.” - Matthew 6:16-18

If this is your first time fasting, or if your fast looks different because of health, pregnancy, or family needs, know this: God honors a willing and humble heart.

How to Prepare Spiritually for the Daniel Fast

1. Begin with Prayer

Before changing anything physically, begin with prayer.

Ask the Lord:

  • What are You inviting me to lay down?

  • What distractions have been crowding my attention?

  • What do You want to reveal or refine in me during this season?

“Draw near to God, and He will draw near to you.”— James 4:8

Even a simple prayer like, “Lord, I want to seek You,” is enough to begin.

2. Set an Intention for the Fast

Fasting without intention can become routine or frustrating. Take a moment to reflect:

  • Am I seeking clarity?

  • Am I asking for renewal?

  • Am I interceding for my family, church, or community?

  • Am I desiring deeper intimacy with God?

Write down the intention(s) the Holy Spirit impresses upon your heart. Return to it on difficult days. Let it anchor you.

“Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be filled.” Matthew 5:6

3. Prepare Your Heart for Simplicity

The Daniel Fast removes certain foods, but its deeper purpose is to remove spiritual clutter.

As you prepare:

  • Consider simplifying your schedule where possible

  • Be mindful of media consumption

  • Create intentional space for Scripture and prayer

Simplicity creates room for attentiveness.

“Be still, and know that I am God.”— Psalm 46:10

4. Plan for Time with God

The time you would normally spend eating, snacking, or preparing meals can become holy ground.

You might choose to:

  • Read Scripture during meals

  • Pray instead of reaching for distractions

  • Use our Bible App devotionals, prayer points and get on the prayer call, to stay grounded daily

Consistency matters more than length. Faithfulness matters more than form.

5. Walk This Journey Together

We were never meant to seek God alone.

That’s why we’re walking through this fast as a church family - adults, children and families - together.

Encourage one another. Pray for one another. Extend grace to one another.

“Let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works.” - Hebrews 10:24

For Families and Children

This fast is also a beautiful opportunity to disciple our children.

While children should not engage in strict food restriction, they can:

  • Join kid-friendly devotionals

  • Fast from sweets or screen time

  • Participate in prayer and Scripture

  • Learn what it means to stand firm in faith

“Train up a child in the way he should go.” - Proverbs 22:6

These small moments can have an eternal impact.

A Final Word of Encouragement

As you prepare for the Daniel Fast, remember this:

God is not waiting for you to get it all right. He is waiting for you to come close.

Whether this season feels stretching or sweet, trust that the Lord will meet you in it.

“You will seek Me and find Me, when you seek Me with all your heart.”— Jeremiah 29:13

We look forward to walking this journey together, seeking His presence daily.
