Created by His Will, Living for His Pleasure - The Will of God

“You are worthy, O Lord, to receive glory and honor and power; for You created all things, and by Your will they exist and were created.” — Revelation 4:11

When many of us hear the phrase “the will of God,” our minds immediately go to a decision: Whom should I marry? Which job should I take? Where should I live? What should I do next? Those questions matter, but God’s will is much larger than direction for an individual choice.

The will of God is not first a secret plan that we must discover. It is God’s revealed purpose—a purpose we are called to trust, obey, and embody in Christ. The most important question is not merely, “God, what is Your will for my life?” but, “God, how does my life fit within Your will?”

We Exist Because God Willed It

Revelation 4 takes us into the throne room of heaven. The elders cast their crowns before God and declare that He alone is worthy because He created all things. Everything that exists owes its life to His purposeful will. Creation is not an accident, and neither are we.

Psalm 115:3 says, “But our God is in heaven; He does whatever He pleases.” Why did God create? Because it pleased Him. God did not create humanity out of loneliness or need. Father, Son, and Holy Spirit have eternally existed in perfect fellowship. God is fully sufficient in Himself. He freely willed our existence because it brought Him pleasure.

That means your life is not meaningless. You are not a mistake. Your worth is not established by society’s values, your achievements, or another person’s opinion. You exist because the sovereign God chose to create humanity for His glory and pleasure.

Created in His Image and Entrusted With Purpose

Genesis 1:26–31 shows that humanity is the capstone of God’s earthly creation. Both male and female bear His image. God blessed them and entrusted them with responsibility: to be fruitful, fill the earth, subdue it, and exercise dominion under His authority.

We were created to enjoy God’s gifts, represent His character, and steward what He has placed within our care. Our responsibilities may differ in their particulars, but every calling must align with this greater purpose. When we faithfully do what God created us to do, our lives bring Him pleasure.

Blessing, Responsibility, and Limits

Genesis 2:15–17 shows another part of God’s good design. God placed Adam in the garden to tend and keep it. He provided abundance, gave meaningful work, and also established a boundary. Human freedom was never meant to become independence from God.

God’s limits are not arbitrary barriers intended to keep us from life. They protect life, purpose, and fellowship with our Creator. They also reveal whether we truly trust and love Him. What appears to be unrestricted freedom can quickly become bondage; sin promises liberty but produces slavery.

True freedom is not the ability to do whatever we want. It is the freedom to become who God created us to be.

Obey What God Has Already Revealed

We often ask God to reveal His will for tomorrow while neglecting the Word He has already given us for today. Before seeking a special answer about the future, we must be willing to obey His revealed commands in the present.

This requires an honest question: Is it more important for me to fulfill my personal dreams, or to fulfill God’s purpose? Faithfulness may not always bring applause, money, ease, or visible glory. But the place where God calls us to be faithful is the place where our lives can truly glorify Him.

People do not merely need to see us; they need to see God in us. The gifts, relationships, opportunities, and authority He has entrusted to us must be stewarded according to His Word. Doing God’s will is not always the easiest path, but it is always the faithful one.

A Prayer for the Journey

Lord, shape our hearts to trust Your will. Strengthen our lives to obey Your will. Fill us with Your Spirit so that we may live out Your will in this generation. Teach us to receive Your gifts with gratitude, honor Your limits with trust, and carry our responsibilities with faithfulness. May our lives bring You pleasure and may we one day hear You say, “Well done.” In Jesus’ name, amen.

1. Where have I treated God’s will mainly as an answer to a personal decision instead of His larger purpose for my life?
2. What gift, responsibility, relationship, or area of influence has God entrusted to me to steward?
3. Is there a boundary in God’s Word that I have viewed as restrictive rather than protective?
4. What has God already revealed that I need to obey today?
5. What would it look like this week to ask, “How does my life fit within God’s will?”
